ARCHITECTURE FOR HUMANITY - WASHINGTON, DC

About Us

Architecture for Humanity was founded in 1999 to promote architectural and design solutions to global, social and humanitarian crises. Through competitions, workshops, educational forums, partnerships with aid organizations and other activities, Architecture for Humanity creates opportunities for architects and designers from around the world to help communities in need. We believe that where resources and expertise are scarce, innovative, sustainable and collaborative design can make a difference.

The DC Chapter of AfH was started in 1995. So far we have done some projects. [much more text here]

Current Projects

AfH-DC is currently working on a variety of projects. Please vist the project pages on the Open Architecture Network for more information.

Community School-Africa

Partnering with UNIFI (www.unifiinc.org), we look to design for the village of Umueze, Nigeria a safe and functional primary schoolhouse. The new building is to replace an existing schoolhouse that has become old and dilapidated, requiring a disproportionate amount of resources and maintenance. The schoolhouse is seen as the center of growth within the village. It is not only a place for children to learn, but a gathering place for the students to populate and create connections that strengthen the community as a whole.

Donate and Shop - NCCF

NCCF (National Center for Children and Families) has ideas for two projects to improve their Bethesda location (just outside of DC) of their main care center. The current project is the design/construction of a Donate and Shop facility that allows for donations to be channeled, organized and then placed for display for the individuals to shop as they please.

Shalom House - SOME renovations

SOME (So Others Might Eat) is an interfaith, community based non profit organization that exists to help the poor and the homeless in Washington, DC. One of their Single Room Occupancy (SRO) homes called the Shalom House needs work done to their communal bathrooms, communal kitchens, and efficiency kitchens. They would also like AFH-DC's help in designing an exterior awning for their entrance, and signage that can be seen from the train line down the street.
